The Premium Author, De-Mystified

Summary:

At MangaMagazine, we do our best to support independent comic and manga authors. That’s why we created MangaMagazine’s Premium Tier.

benefits

Purpose

The idea behind the Premium Tier is to create an environment where serious creators can really focus on doing what they love to do and make money doing it.  Everything on our website, from our handy Dashboard to our online library is made with this in mind. We know that there are lots of creators out there who want to tell their stories using manga or comics, but struggle doing it on their own.

Benefits

There are a lot of great reasons to work with us. Here are just a few:

1.)  We handle the financial side:

We pay our artists every month with a guaranteed minimum stipend plus a percentage of our $20,000 pool! No more worrying about how much your ad space is selling for on Google adwords or trying to sell merchandise through PayPal. We take care of the messy accounting, and you get a nice payment every month. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

2.)  We’ll Market For you

Let us handle your advertising! We’ve got a team of seasoned experts who understand the best way to place your ads. Don’t fret over which CTR ratio is higher or what a CPM or CTC is. Leave those acronyms to us.

3.)  Advertising matching

We believe the success of each author helps our site grow.  So, for every dollar a premium author puts towards Google adwords advertising their series each month, we match fifty cents up to $400.  So if an author chooses to spend $400 in advertising, we match an additional $200.  We take care of all the details for preparing and tracking your ads, you get a clean report showing your results at the end of the month.

4.) No sneaky contracts

Unlike many comic publishers, we don’t make our Premium Authors sign any contracts. Our authors are free to post their comic wherever they like!  This is directly from our terms of use: “The above licenses granted by you in Content you submit to the Service terminate within 30 days after you remove or delete your content from the the site.”

5.) Author-owned copyrights

When you join MangaMagazine, you maintain all the rights to your work! This means that if you decide to take their comic off of our site, we retain no rights to publish, advertise, or use any of your work without your consent. The author’s rights belong to the author, and we go out of our way to make sure they always will.

How it Works

  1. Each Premium Author is expected to produces at least 15 pages of content per month (ads, filler illustrations, and copyright pages are not counted in this total).
  2. Each Premium Author receives a percentage of the $20,000 pool based on the paid traffic they bring to the site each month.  Paid traffic is calculated the number of page views that month by subscribers.
  3. Each Premium Author is paid a minimum stipend of $150 as long as the minimum page limit is achieved.
  4. The payment cycle resets at the end of each month, so if the page limit requirements are not met, the Premium Author will not receive any payment for that month.

Requirements

There are a few requirements that need to be met before an author gets accepted into the Premium Tier.

  1. You have to be at least 18 years of age to qualify.
  2. You must have a manga or comic with at least three chapters worth of high quality content. In the case of a new series, you are expected to provide evidence that you
have created a regularly updated series in the past that meets this qualification.
  3. We’re looking for professional-quality comics, so consistency in pages is needed.

Please visit the Author Levels section of our FAQ if you have any question or feel free to send us a question through our Contact Us form.  You can also read our site Terms of Use to double check our content rights guarantee.

  1. Thanks Victor for the clarification on what it takes to become a premium artist on MM. For a minute there I thought it was unattainable lol. This email has got me super motivated to make my comic “Bully Eater” premium tier quality. I want to fill that empty spot that you have for a premium level martial arts manga! One quick question for you, I notice that most of your premium authors have paperback and eBook versions of their comics for sale online through Amazon. Is that something the author is responsible for creating or does MM handle it?

    • ashikaiashikai ()

Right now the author handles that, but we’re working to make the printing process a lot easier. We’ll have more information on that at a later date. :)

  2. Hey Victor i’m very interested in improving my self and have my action packed comic, ANIYI associate with the web. so what else do i have to do to get that accomplished?

    • ashikaiashikai ()

I’m not quite sure I understand the question. Could you elaborate?

  3. Josh ()

What if a piece is a collaboration and one party is over while the other is under?

    • ashikaiashikai ()

Both parties need to be 18 years or older. It’s a legal responsibility.

  4. Pedro ()

What is the average payment of the premium authors?

    • ashikaiashikai ()

It varies GREATLY depending on traffic. If an author brings in 20% of the traffic that month, they earned $4,000. If they bring in 50% of the traffic, they get $10,000. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose actual payment information.

      • Pedro ()

Thanks a lot! Another question: Can i disclose my job in other places besides here. For example, in a official website?

        • ashikaiashikai ()

I’m not sure I understand the question.

  5. Clare ()

Hi Victor, I was just wondering how it is possible to provide sufficient evidence that I
have created a regularly updated series in the past that meets this qualification? Will links suffice?
    Clare

    • ashikaiashikai ()

We don’t start any series at the Premium level. All series start at the Member level. We don’t really publicly critique series based on suitability for promotion.

If your previous work is hosted on another website, go ahead and upload it to MM.net and put a link in the comic description to the original comic mirror. There are forum threads where you can post links to your work to get feedback, and all of our admins are very proactive in finding new series. If your series is strong, it’ll gain a following fairly quickly and that should give you an idea of how eligible you are for promotion.

Do I have to be 18 or just my parents ( is the age 18 requierds for the money transparency or something else )

  7. What qualifies as High Quality and do we need to submit our work already in HQ prior to start of said program>

    • ashikaiashikai ()

High Quality means that your artwork is at a professional level and that your storytelling is clear and effective. It’s not about the resolution of the images themselves, but about your skill level as an artist.
